Evaluating Botanical Dietary Supplements using NMR Spectroscopy
Botanical dietary supplements are a $21 billion dollar industry in the US; the value coming from properties that include medicinal, therapeutic, flavor or scent. Producers, suppliers and purchasers have an interest in evaluating the quality of a botanical supplement to assess identity and composition and thus, assure product quality and safety. Botanical supplements are typically a complex mixture of components, some of which are known components and some are unknown. As a result, analytical analysis using traditional methods is challenging. A new tool for the analysis of botanical supplements is Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR). This webinar discusses the use of NMR as a non-targeted fingerprinting tool to evaluate botanical dietary supplements. Applications to be discussed include (1) identity, composition and vendor analysis, (2) detection of adulterants, and (3) quantification of components.
